About Davy Crockett National Forest

Davy Crockett National Forest offers an expansive array of outdoor activities in the heart of eastern Texas, with lush landscapes and diverse wildlife drawing nature enthusiasts year-round.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Davy Crockett National Forest, named after the legendary American folk hero, spans over 160,000 acres in east Texas, providing a vital woodland habitat for numerous species. Located between the towns of Crockett, Lufkin, and Nacogdoches, the forest showcases a diverse ecology of pine and hardwood trees, which support a vibrant array of wildlife. Historically, the forest has been a sanctuary for nature and a hub for outdoor recreation since its establishment in 1936. Its geography features the rolling hills typical of Texas's Piney Woods, interspersed with creeks and rivers that offer opportunities for fishing and paddle sports. Popular among visitors are its 50 miles of multi-use trails, where hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding are favorite pastimes. One of the standout features is the Four C National Recreation Trail, offering a glimpse into the forest's pristine beauty. The forest is also known for the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, which provides camping, swimming, and picnicking facilities. With an emphasis on conservation, the forest is diligently managed to preserve its natural resources while enabling sustainable tourism and recreation. The Davy Crockett National Forest remains a testament to the importance of protecting natural landscapes, providing both ecological benefits and recreational enjoyment.
