About Caledonian Forest

The Caledonian Forest is a rare and ancient native woodland in Scotland, offering rich biodiversity and unique outdoor experiences such as hiking, wildlife watching, and nature photography.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Caledonian Forest represents the remnants of the ancient temperate rainforest that once covered much of Scotland following the last Ice Age. Covering scattered patches primarily across the Scottish Highlands, these woodlands consist mainly of Scots pine, birch, rowan, and juniper, creating one of Europe’s most significant and oldest ecosystems. The forest supports a diversity of wildlife, including iconic species such as red deer, Scottish wildcats, capercaillie, and the elusive golden eagle. Historically, this forest was extensive but was greatly diminished through centuries of deforestation, grazing, and land management. Today, conservation efforts aim to restore and expand Caledonian Forest habitats, promoting natural regeneration and rewilding. Visitors can enjoy numerous trails that wind through pinewoods, lochs, and moorlands, providing opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and peaceful retreats in nature. Key locations include Glen Affric, Rothiemurchus Forest, and the Cairngorms National Park, where some of the best examples of Caledonian Forest can be experienced. The forest's rugged beauty and ecological value attract naturalists, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to connect with Scotland’s ancient natural heritage.
