About Black Mountains

The Black Mountains in North Carolina offer some of the highest peaks in the Eastern United States, providing rugged terrain and exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, camping, and climbing.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Black Mountains are a prominent mountain range located in western North Carolina, primarily within the Pisgah National Forest. They are home to Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River at 6,684 feet. The range features steep slopes, dense forests of spruce and fir, and diverse ecosystems that support a wide range of plant and animal life, including rare species like the Carolina northern flying squirrel. The Black Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountains and represent some of the most dramatic alpine environments in the southeast. Historically, these mountains were significant for early settlers and Native American tribes, and the region has since become a notable destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Popular activities include hiking the challenging trails such as the Mount Mitchell Trail, birdwatching, fishing in mountain streams, and camping in designated areas. The Black Mountains offer stunning scenic views, especially from summit lookouts, and the cooler elevations make it a favored summer retreat. Winter brings occasional snow and ice, creating additional challenges and opportunities such as snowshoeing. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the fragile high elevation flora and fauna, while maintaining the wilderness character of the area. Visitors can explore a network of trails and backcountry campsites, making it a prime location for both day hikes and extended backpacking trips.
