About Białowieża Forest UNESCO World Heritage Site

Białowieża Forest is one of Europe’s last and largest remaining parts of the primeval forest that once stretched across the continent, offering unparalleled outdoor opportunities to experience ancient woodland and observe rare wildlife including the iconic European bison.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Białowieża Forest, straddling the border between Poland and Belarus, is a unique transboundary UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve that represents the last vestige of the immense primeval forest that once covered the European Plain. Spanning approximately 150,000 hectares, the forest is characterized by a mixed mosaic of oak, hornbeam, lime, spruce, pine, and alder trees, some of which are hundreds of years old. The forest’s tangled ecosystem supports an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna, including many rare and endangered species such as the European bison (wisent), lynx, wolves, wild boar, and over 250 bird species. Historically, Białowieża has been preserved under various protections dating back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest forest reserves in Europe. Today, the forest invites outdoor enthusiasts to explore extensive trails through untouched woodland, witness ancient trees, and engage in birdwatching, guided nature tours, and educational visits. Key landmarks include the Białowieża National Park (Poland), Białowieża Primeval Forest Exhibit, and the massive “Wielki Dąb” (Great Oak), estimated to be 450–550 years old. The site’s mystical atmosphere, combined with its ecological importance, draws naturalists, photographers, and eco-tourists alike. Access is managed to balance visitor experience and conservation efforts, making it a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in a forest ecosystem essentially unchanged since prehistoric times.
