About Białowieża Forest Biosphere Reserve

Białowieża Forest Biosphere Reserve is one of Europe’s last and largest remaining primeval forests, renowned for its ancient woodland, rich biodiversity, and iconic European bison population.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Białowieża Forest Biosphere Reserve spans the Poland-Belarus border, encompassing roughly 150,000 hectares of ancient temperate forest that has endured relatively untouched by industrial logging or farming. This primeval woodland is part of the larger Białowieża Forest complex, which represents the last vestiges of the vast forest that once covered much of Europe. Geographically, the reserve features a mosaic of old-growth trees such as oak, linden, pine, and spruce, along with rich understory vegetation, wetlands, and meadows. The forest is renowned for its exceptionally high biodiversity, including rare and endangered species like the European bison (wisent), lynx, wolf, eagle owl, and numerous rare fungi and plants.

Established as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1992, it serves as a model for sustainable ecosystem conservation and research. The forest is historically significant, having been royal hunting grounds and carefully protected over centuries, with some parts dating back to protection orders from the 15th century. Visitors are drawn to Białowieża for hiking its network of trails, wildlife watching, particularly of the free-roaming European bison herds, and exploring cultural sites such as the Białowieża National Park Visitor Center and Museum.

Key recreation opportunities include guided nature walks, cycling on designated routes, bird watching, and photography. The reserve attracts ecotourists seeking a chance to experience an ancient forest ecosystem in Europe. Due to its sensitive environment, access is managed with permits in some areas to minimize human impact. The Transboundary nature of the reserve also fosters international collaboration in forest and wildlife conservation research, making it a significant site for studying temperate forest ecology and biodiversity.
