Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Bass River State Forest, located in the heart of New Jersey's Pine Barrens, spans over 28,000 acres of stunning natural landscapes. The forest is characterized by its sandy soils and dense pine stands, which create a unique ecosystem supporting a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Established in 1905, it was the first state forest in New Jersey, initially founded to provide timber and to prevent forest fires. Over the years, it has transformed into a hub for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy hiking on its numerous trails, which wind through forested areas and along picturesque rivers. The forest also features Lake Absegami, a 67-acre lake that offers swimming, canoeing, and fishing.
