About Siuslaw National Forest (coastal section)

The coastal section of Siuslaw National Forest extends along the central Oregon coast, encompassing approximately 630,000 acres of diverse landscapes, including ancient Sitka spruce and Douglas fir forests, coastal dunes, estuaries, and rugged shoreline. This area provides critical habitat for Roosevelt elk, black bears, migratory birds, and multiple salmon species. The forest is marked by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, with many trails and viewpoints offering sweeping ocean vistas and access to pristine beaches. Historically, the Siuslaw Forest grew from timber harvesting and indigenous use, serving as an important resource area. Today, it balances conservation with recreation. Popular activities include hiking through lush temperate rainforests, off-road vehicle trails, mountain biking, horseback riding, and coastal fishing. Key landmarks within the coastal section include the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Marys Peak—the highest summit in the Oregon Coast Range—and Cape Perpetua, a prominent headland with several scenic overlooks. The forest offers well-maintained campgrounds close to both ocean and forest environments. Visitors appreciate the forest’s mix of rugged outdoor adventure and serene natural settings, making it a preferred destination for fishing, bird watching, and beachcombing. Seasonal wildflower displays and tidepool explorations add to its appeal. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the forest supports sustainable logging alongside conservation efforts, ensuring long-term habitat protection and recreation opportunities for the public.
