About Scottish Borders Forest Park

Scottish Borders Forest Park spans approximately 27,000 acres of mixed native and planted woodlands in the southeastern region of Scotland. Created in 2002, the park aims to restore forest cover and promote sustainable recreation and biodiversity. The terrain features rolling hills, river valleys—most notably those carved by the River Tweed—and extensive forests composed primarily of Scots pine, birch, oak, and rowan. It incorporates several distinct forest blocks, including Hyndlee, Shaw Burn, and Glentress, which are well known for their mountain biking trails and walking paths.

The area has a rich cultural legacy with historical sites dating from medieval times to remnants of ancient settlements. Wildlife thrives here, with roe deer, red squirrels, otters, and many bird species including ospreys often observed. The park also supports conservation projects to protect rare and native habitats.

Visitors enjoy a variety of outdoor activities spread across well-maintained trails, including the internationally renowned Glentress and Innerleithen mountain biking centers, which host national and international competitions. Hiking routes vary from gentle riverside paths to challenging upland jobs, and fishing opportunities abound along the Tweed and its tributaries. Scenic viewpoints offer panoramic vistas of the Borders' hills and valleys. Facilities include visitor centers, picnic areas, and campgrounds, making it a family-friendly destination or an adventure base for experienced outdoor enthusiasts.
