Ouachita National Forest is a vast expanse of federally protected woodland situated in western Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma. Established in 1907, it is one of the oldest national forests in the southern United States and covers approximately 1.8 million acres. The forest encompasses the Ouachita Mountains, a unique east-west trending range featuring rounded ridges, pine and hardwood forests, and numerous streams and rivers. Ecologically, the forest supports mixed oak-pine forests, abundant wildlife including black bears, white-tailed deer, and numerous bird species.
