About Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area

Located in southwestern Idaho along the Snake River Canyon near Boise, the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area encompasses approximately 484,000 acres of dramatic basalt cliffs, deep river canyons, and sagebrush steppe habitat. Established in 1993, the area is internationally recognized for hosting one of the largest concentrations of nesting birds of prey, including species such as peregrine falcons, golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, great horned owls, and American kestrels. The striking geological formations of the Snake River Canyon provide ideal nesting sites and vantage points for these raptors.

Recreational opportunities include hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, and mountain biking on a network of dispersed trails, many offering scenic overlooks of the river and bird habitats. The area also supports hunting and limited camping, with emphasis on minimizing disturbance to sensitive wildlife. Notable landmarks include the basalt cliffs of the Snake River Canyon and the Owyhee Mountains to the south. Visitors often come during spring and early summer to witness raptor courtship and fledging.

The conservation area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with a strong focus on habitat preservation and research partnerships with universities and wildlife organizations. While rugged, the landscape offers a unique blend of high desert ecosystem and river corridor, resulting in a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Birding enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike find this area a valuable destination for experiencing wild raptors and the striking natural environment of the American West.
