About Manassas National Battlefield Park

Manassas National Battlefield Park is located in northeastern Virginia and protects the grounds of the First and Second Battles of Bull Run (also called First and Second Manassas), which were pivotal early engagements in the American Civil War. Covering rolling fields, forests, and small streams, the park spans over 5,000 acres of preserved historic landscape that has remained much as it appeared during the 1860s. Visitors can explore numerous hiking trails that wind past battlefields, monument sites, and preserved artillery positions while interpretive signage and a visitor center provide detailed historical context. The park’s forested and open habitats support a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species, making it an attractive destination for history enthusiasts and outdoor recreationists alike. Key landmarks include the Stone House, an 18th-century structure used as a field hospital; Henry Hill, the site of intense fighting; and multiple Confederate and Union monuments. Seasonal ranger-led programs, battlefield reenactments, and educational events enhance the visitor experience. While primarily focused on battlefield preservation and history, the park also offers opportunities for hiking, bird watching, photography, and picnicking. With easy access from Washington, D.C. and Richmond, the park provides a valuable outdoor retreat for locals and tourists seeking to learn more about Civil War history while enjoying serene natural surroundings.
