Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Mount Athos is a unique self-governing monastic state within Greece, lying on the Athos Peninsula in the northern part of the country. It is home to 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries and numerous sketes and hermitages scattered throughout its rugged and forested terrain. This sacred place is renowned for its spiritual significance as a center of Orthodox monasticism, with roots going back to at least the 9th century. The landscape is characterized by dramatic cliffs, ancient trails, and dense forests teeming with biodiversity. Due to its spiritual nature, female visitors are prohibited, but male visitors can explore the monasteries, hike the mountain pathways, and enjoy serene meditation in the deeply spiritual environment. Monasteries like the Great Lavra and Vatopedi are noted for their exquisite Byzantine architecture and invaluable religious artifacts. Although primarily a site of religious devotion, Mount Athos also captivates nature lovers and hikers with its untouched ecosystems and scenic vistas of the Aegean Sea.
