About Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary is located on the north shore of Lake Erie near the town of Point Pelee in Ontario, Canada. Established in 1887, it was one of the first protected areas dedicated primarily to safeguarding migratory bird habitat and remains one of the longest-standing bird sanctuaries in North America. The sanctuary encompasses significant marsh, wetland, and coastal shoreline habitat critical for migratory birds, particularly waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds. Its rich biodiversity makes it an important stopover and breeding ground within the Atlantic Flyway migration system. Visitors can experience peaceful birdwatching platforms and trails that wind around marshes and ponds, providing spectacular views and encounters with species such as Canada geese, great blue herons, and a variety of duck species. The sanctuary is especially busy during migration seasons in spring and fall, attracting ornithologists and nature enthusiasts eager to observe thousands of birds in transit. Beyond birding, the sanctuary also offers educational programming about wetland ecosystems and conservation. Its ecological value lies not only in protection of avian species but also in maintaining water quality and supporting diverse native plants and aquatic life. While the sanctuary is primarily a conservation-focused area, it invites respectful outdoor recreation and photography, contributing to awareness and appreciation of migratory bird conservation. Its proximity to other natural areas in southwestern Ontario makes it a key destination for outdoor recreation and wildlife study.
