Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Tommy Wyche Heritage Preserve is a 754-acre natural preserve situated in the northern part of South Carolina near the town of Walhalla. It covers rugged terrain along the Chattooga River Gorge, a National Wild and Scenic River, providing a combination of steep cliffs, mixed hardwood forests, and open rock faces. The preserve was donated by conservationist Tommy Wyche to ensure protection of this ecologically rich area. This preserve features diverse plant communities from mature hardwood forests to unique cliffside species. It is also home to a range of wildlife including black bears, white-tailed deer, and numerous bird species. The main outdoor activities include hiking and wildlife viewing on a network of well-maintained trails that lead to spectacular overlooks with panoramic views of the Chattooga Gorge and surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Notable landmarks within the preserve include the famous Sumter National Forest cliffs and views of the Chattooga River’s dramatic canyon. The preserve attracts outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate its peaceful setting, striking geology, and relatively low visitor traffic which provides a more solitary wilderness experience. The area is managed by The Nature Conservancy, emphasizing conservation and responsible recreation. Visitors enjoy an intimate natural experience with opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and seasonal wildflower viewing. The preserve is a gateway to the larger Sumter National Forest region and is frequently paired with visits to nearby recreational areas such as Whitewater Falls and Oconee State Park.
