About Nærøyfjord UNESCO World Heritage Area

Nærøyfjord is a dramatic fjord in western Norway renowned for its steep mountains, pristine waters, and along with the adjoining Geirangerfjord, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its natural beauty and geological significance.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Nærøyfjord is a narrow fjord extending about 18 kilometers (11 miles) from the larger Sognefjord in Vestland County, Norway. It is characterized by sheer cliffs rising up to 1,700 meters (5,600 feet) above the fjord's surface, deep blue waters, and sparse human development, offering an extraordinary example of glaciated landscapes. The fjord’s serene waters are fed by numerous waterfalls, including the famous Stigfossen and Kjelfossen, which plunge dramatically down steep rock faces. Its steep valley walls support old-growth forests and alpine vegetation that provide habitat for diverse wildlife including otters, eagles, and salmon. The area embodies geological processes from the last ice age, with sharply carved moraines and rock formations visible throughout. Visitors come to Nærøyfjord for boat cruises that offer unparalleled fjord views, hiking routes along mountain ridges, and kayaking in the calm water. The small village of Gudvangen, located at the fjord’s inland tip, is a gateway with cultural history tracing back to Viking settlements, showcasing traditional Norwegian architecture and storytelling. Hiking opportunities include trails leading to scenic lookouts such as the Stegastein viewpoint, where panoramic vistas reveal the fjord’s expanse and winding shape. Nærøyfjord’s combination of awe-inspiring geology, rich ecology, and opportunities for water and mountain recreation attract outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking tranquility amid Norway's iconic landscape.
