Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located on the northeast tip of Edisto Island in South Carolina, Botany Bay Heritage Preserve/Wildlife Management Area encompasses 4,687 acres of striking natural beauty and historical significance. The area features a blend of maritime forest, salt marshes, beachfront, and agricultural fields, making it a haven for biodiverse plant and wildlife populations. The land that now forms Botany Bay was once home to extensive sea island cotton plantations, remnants of which can still be observed today. Visitors are drawn to the location for its picturesque landscapes, including deserted beaches lined with bleached tree trunks, commonly known as 'boneyard beaches.' Ecological restoration and conservation efforts support wildlife such as endangered sea turtles, shorebirds, and unique flora. The preserve is also ideal for bird watching, hiking, photography, and providing a peaceful environment to appreciate the natural and historical richness of the Lowcountry.
