About Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor

The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor preserves a vital region that played a central role in America’s Industrial Revolution, offering a mix of historical sites, river landscapes, and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Spanning both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor follows the course of the Blackstone River, protecting an area recognized as the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. This corridor stretches across more than 1,000 square miles of cultural and natural assets tied to early industrial developments during the late 18th and 19th centuries. The area features early mill villages, canals, historic dams, and working artifacts from textile mills, illustrating the evolution of industry and community life in New England. The river itself and adjoining greenways provide scenic settings for hiking, biking, kayaking, and fishing. Visitors can explore historic villages such as Slater Mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, noted as the location of America’s first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill. The corridor’s ecological diversity includes riparian habitats populated with migratory birds, beavers, and native fish species. Key recreation spots include the Blackstone River Greenway, a multi-use trail stretching over 48 miles along the river, part of which is designated a National Recreation Trail. The corridor preserves an intertwined landscape of urban, suburban, and rural environments with interpretive centers, museums, and parks offering rich educational experiences. Outdoor enthusiasts will find peaceful riverside trails, opportunities for paddling, and chance wildlife viewing, complemented by accessible historical attractions. The corridor appeals to history buffs, recreational users, and families seeking a mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage in the Northeastern United States.
