About Banna Strand Natural Heritage Area

Banna Strand Natural Heritage Area is a coastal protected site renowned for its extensive sandy beach and diverse dune ecosystems, offering excellent opportunities for beach recreation and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located on the Atlantic coast in County Kerry, Ireland, Banna Strand Natural Heritage Area encompasses a spectacular stretch of sandy beach approximately 5 kilometers long, backed by an extensive system of sand dunes and grassy habitats. This area is valued both for its natural beauty and ecological importance, hosting a rich variety of coastal plants, including rare dune species, and serving as a habitat for numerous bird species, some of which are protected under European directives. Banna Strand has historical significance as well, famously connected to the 1916 Easter Rising when the failed Irish attempt to land arms took place here. Today, visitors flock to Banna Strand for its clean, open beach ideal for swimming, walking, and kite surfing. The sand dunes offer tranquil walking routes with the opportunity to observe diverse plant life and seabirds such as terns and waders. The protected status helps ensure conservation of the sensitive dune systems, which are vulnerable to erosion and human impact. Its accessibility from nearby Tralee and other towns makes it a popular day trip destination, with facilities including car parks and nearby pubs and accommodations. The combination of natural habitat, recreational beach activities, and historical resonance ensures Banna Strand remains a treasured coastal heritage site in Ireland.
