Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark covers over 3,000 square kilometers across counties Fermanagh in Northern Ireland and Cavan and Leitrim in the Republic of Ireland. This geopark is renowned for its karst landscape dominated by Cuilcagh Mountain, which provides panoramic views and features the famous Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark at its core. The terrain is characterized by limestone pavements, underground rivers, sinkholes, and tranquil lakes, creating a mosaic of habitats that host a diverse range of flora and fauna including rare orchids, red squirrels, peregrine falcons, and otters. Historically, this area has roots reaching back to ancient times, with megalithic tombs, historic settlements, and remnants of old mining activity. Recreational opportunities abound, with hiking trails like the renowned Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail—also known as the 'Stairway to Heaven'—offering a unique elevated walkway through the bogland to the summit plateau. Visitors can explore caves, go birdwatching, fish in clear lakes, and enjoy the quiet countryside shared by two cultures. The geopark also promotes sustainable tourism and environmental education, making it a valued destination for those seeking to connect deeply with the natural and cultural landscape of this cross-border region.
