About Busse Woods

Busse Woods, officially known as Ned Brown Forest Preserve, spans nearly 3,700 acres across Cook County, Illinois. This extensive forest preserve is centered around Busse Lake, a man-made reservoir with 590 acres of water, making it a popular locale for boating, fishing, and birdwatching. The preserve features a mosaic of oak and hickory woodlands, wetlands, and grasslands providing habitat for a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Busse Woods plays a crucial role in protecting natural corridors in a heavily urbanized region. Historically, it was established as part of the Cook County Forest Preserve system in the early 20th century to conserve natural resources and provide outdoor recreation near the metropolitan area. The preserve offers over 11 miles of paved and natural surface trails that wind through shaded woods, ideal for hiking, running, and biking. Canoeing and kayaking are popular on Busse Lake, with a boat launch available from spring through fall. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are common when conditions permit. Several picnic areas, fishing piers, and playgrounds make Busse Woods a well-rounded destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Its proximity to suburban communities such as Elk Grove Village and Schaumburg makes it accessible for day trips while providing a peaceful natural retreat from the Chicago metropolitan area bustle. The preserve is a prime example of successful urban forest conservation, blending recreation and wildlife habitat near a major city.
