About Watchung Reservation

Watchung Reservation spans over 2,000 acres across the First Watchung Mountain ridge in Union County, New Jersey. This county park provides a rich combination of natural ecosystems including dense hardwood forests, streams, lakes, and wetlands. The terrain is characterized by rugged ridges, glacial boulders, and several small bodies of water, most notably Surprise Lake. Historically, the area was inhabited by Native American Lenape people and later played a role in colonial-era activities and infrastructure, such as the Watchung Stables and the Deserted Village of Feltville—an early 18th-century mill town preserved within the park. The reservation offers an extensive network of over 20 miles of multi-use trails popular for hiking, mountain biking, and birdwatching. Anglers frequent its lakes and streams for bass and trout. Notable natural landmarks include Hemlock Falls, a scenic 15-foot waterfall accessible via the Watchung Trail. The park also holds the Trailside Nature & Science Center, which provides educational programs, exhibits, and information for visitors. Its wooded landscape supports diverse flora including hemlocks, oaks, and hickories, and is home to wildlife such as white-tailed deer, foxes, and various bird species. The combination of natural beauty, historic sites, and recreational facilities makes Watchung Reservation a favored local destination for outdoor activities and family outings.
