About Fort Gratiot County Park

Fort Gratiot County Park is located in St. Clair County along the eastern shore of Lake Huron, providing visitors with expansive views of the lake and access to a variety of outdoor recreation activities. The park features over 200 acres of forested land, beach shoreline, and open grassy areas. The park’s ecology includes mixed hardwood forests with oak, maple, and ash, as well as wetland areas that support local bird species and small mammals. Historically, the area is near the original site of Fort Gratiot, a U.S. Army post established in 1814 to guard the strategic entry to the St. Clair River and the Great Lakes shipping routes. Today, the park offers opportunities for hiking, picnicking, beachcombing, and birdwatching, with trails winding through the woods and leading to the lakefront. Notable landmarks include the historic lighthouse at Fort Gratiot Light Park nearby, one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes, though it lies just outside the county park boundary. Visitors are drawn to Fort Gratiot County Park for its quiet natural setting close to urban areas like Port Huron, making it an accessible outdoor retreat. Facilities include picnic shelters, playgrounds, and grills, with ample parking and restrooms.
