DuPage County Forest Preserve offers over 25,000 acres of protected natural spaces, providing residents and visitors a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities including hiking, fishing, and wildlife observation in the Chicago suburbs.
The DuPage County Forest Preserve system spans over 25,000 acres across northern Illinois, making it one of the largest county-operated forest preserve districts in the country. It includes a diverse mix of native prairie, oak savannas, wetlands, woodlands, and restored natural areas. The preserves protect the watersheds of the East Branch and West Branch of the DuPage River, among other local water resources, helping to maintain water quality and biodiversity. Established in 1915, the district has grown steadily to provide outdoor recreation, environmental education, and conservation. Visitors can explore more than 130 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The preserves feature popular landmarks such as the Morton Arboretum, with its extensive tree collections and educational exhibits, and Willowbrook Wildlife Center, focused on rehabilitation and public awareness of native wildlife. Several preserves, including Green Valley and Herrick Lake, are well known for fishing and paddle sports on their lakes. Bird watchers can observe migratory species and local wildlife in the varied habitats that the preserves maintain. The Forest Preserve District also manages numerous picnic areas, interpretive centers, and seasonal programs for families, fostering community engagement with nature close to the Chicago metropolitan area.
