Wappapello Lake Conservation Area offers a blend of scenic water-based recreation and forested landscapes ideal for hiking, fishing, and wildlife watching in southeastern Missouri.
Wappapello Lake Conservation Area encompasses a diverse landscape surrounding the 8,400-acre Wappapello Lake, formed by the damming of the St. Francis River. Located in Wayne County, Missouri, the area covers approximately 23,000 acres of forest, wetlands, and open woodlands. The region supports a mix of oak-hickory forests and is home to a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous migratory bird species. Historically, the lake was created in the late 1930s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control and hydroelectric power, but it has since become a popular recreation destination managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Visitors to Wappapello can enjoy fishing for species such as largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish; boating and paddle sports on the lake’s calm waters; and hiking or mountain biking on multiple trails weaving through woodlands and along shorelines. The forested hills surrounding the lake offer excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and birdwatching, especially in spring and fall migrations. Notable landmarks include the Wappapello Lake Dam and the adjacent Wappapello State Park, which provides additional recreational facilities. The conservation area's mixture of aquatic and terrestrial habitats, combined with accessible amenities, makes it a favored destination for outdoor enthusiasts in Missouri.
