About Long Sault Conservation Area

Long Sault Conservation Area is located along the St. Lawrence River near Ingleside in southeastern Ontario, Canada. Spanning roughly 1,200 acres, the area features a combination of riverfront islands, wetlands, and forested land. It was created as a response to flooding concerns from the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the 1950s and serves as an important habitat for diverse wildlife, including migratory birds, fish species, and freshwater plants. The protected wetlands provide critical spawning grounds for fish and serve as a refuge for various bird species, making it an excellent spot for wildlife viewing.

Visitors to Long Sault Conservation Area are drawn to its extensive recreational offerings. The campground provides over 300 sites with amenities for both tents and trailers, making it a favored overnight destination. The area's large marina supports boating and fishing, with anglers targeting walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. Several maintained trails offer easy to moderate hikes through woodlands and along river banks with scenic views. Paddle sports such as kayaking and canoeing allow exploration of the waterways, including the spacious waterfront and interior bays.

The area's proximity to the St. Lawrence River means changing water levels and varied wildlife activity, offering seasonal experiences from spring bird migrations to autumn fishing runs. Educational programming and events hosted by the managing authority, the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, highlight conservation efforts and natural history. The conservation area's well-maintained facilities, combined with its stunning river environment, make it a prime outdoor recreation destination for families, anglers, and nature enthusiasts.
