About Lake Jacomo Conservation Area

Located in Jackson County, Missouri, Lake Jacomo Conservation Area encompasses over 7,800 acres centered around Lake Jacomo, a 970-acre reservoir created in the mid-20th century as a reservoir for the Kansas City metropolitan area and a public recreational resource. The area features hardwood forests, open fields, and gently rolling terrain characteristic of Missouri's prairies and woodlands. The lake is well-stocked with bass, crappie, and catfish, making it a popular location for anglers. The conservation area is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation and offers an extensive network of trails, including the National Recreation Trail-designated Lake Jacomo Trail, which appeals to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. There are developed campgrounds and picnic areas, as well as boat ramps and fishing docks along the lake. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching opportunities with species such as great blue herons and bald eagles present seasonally. The site is historically significant as part of regional flood control and water management plans and has evolved into one of the Kansas City area’s premier natural recreation destinations. With proximity to the city, it provides a relatively accessible wilderness experience for visitors seeking both water- and land-based outdoor activities. Facilities include boat rentals, accessible fishing piers, and interpretive signage, enhancing the visitor experience. Wildlife sightings commonly include white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various small mammals.
