About Columbia Bottom Conservation Area

Located on the north bank of the Missouri River in St. Charles County, Missouri, Columbia Bottom Conservation Area encompasses diverse floodplain ecosystems shaped by seasonal river flows. Its geography primarily includes bottomland hardwood forests, oxbow lakes, wetlands, and meandering channels that offer refuge to many species of birds, mammals, and aquatic life. Historically, this land was periodically flooded, playing a crucial role in the ecology and hydrology of the Missouri River floodplain. The area was acquired and is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation to protect the habitat and provide outdoor recreation. Visitors can explore several miles of trails that wind through forests and wetlands, enjoy birdwatching at observation blinds, and fish in the Missouri River or backwater lakes. The conservation area is especially notable for migratory waterfowl and songbirds during spring and fall. Hunting for waterfowl and deer is also regulated here. A key landmark is the Glassberg Family Lake, featuring amenities for fishing and wildlife viewing. Columbia Bottom’s proximity to St. Louis makes it a popular day-use destination for nature walks, canoeing, and photography. The area emphasizes habitat restoration efforts such as invasive species control and the maintenance of native vegetation to support fish and wildlife populations. With its blend of natural habitats and outdoor activities, the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area serves as an accessible green space emphasizing conservation and recreation near a major metropolitan area.
