About Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve

Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve

Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve is a protected coastal forest area located near the town of Kitty Hawk on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Covering a portion of maritime upland forest, this reserve preserves one of the few remaining examples of sea-facing hardwood forests in the region. The land features a mix of hardwood trees such as live oaks, red cedars, and pines, providing critical habitat for various bird species, small mammals, and endemic plants adapted to the saline environment influenced by nearby Pamlico Sound. The area is relatively flat with sandy soils and includes several freshwater ponds and small wetlands that contribute to its ecological diversity. Historically, the Outer Banks region is known for its connection to early aviation and the Wright Brothers’ first flight, with Kitty Hawk serving as an entry point to local heritage as well as natural exploration. Recreation at Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve focuses primarily on hiking, birdwatching, photography, and experiencing a quiet, less developed coastal forest area compared to nearby beach parks. The reserve’s trails are easy to moderate, winding through shaded woodlands, and offer opportunities to spot migratory and resident bird species, including warblers and herons. Unlike the beach areas, the Reserve provides a peaceful forested atmosphere away from the crowds and oceanfront activities. Visitors appreciate the chance to connect with a maritime forest ecosystem and learn about the role such habitats play in coastal resilience and biodiversity. The Reserve is managed to protect its sensitive environment while allowing low-impact outdoor activities, making it a valuable natural refuge and educational resource on the Outer Banks.
