The Hyrcanian Forests Biosphere Reserve, located along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea within northern Iran's Mazandaran, Gilan, and Golestan provinces, encompasses a unique temperate broadleaf forest that dates back approximately 25 to 50 million years. This forest represents one of the world's last remnants of the ancient laurel forest that once covered much of Eurasia during the Tertiary period. Characterized by humid temperate climate conditions, the reserve is rich in diverse flora, including ancient hardwood species such as Persian ironwood, hornbeam, beech, and alder. This vibrant ecosystem supports an array of wildlife, notably endangered species like the Persian leopard, East Caucasian tur, Caspian red deer, and over 170 bird species.
The Hyrcanian Forests span a range of elevations from sea level up into the Alborz mountain foothills, featuring scenic river valleys, steep ridges, and dense forest canopies that create a cool, moist refuge amid Iran's otherwise dry climate.
