Established as a biosphere reserve in 2009, it combines two significant protected areas: the Satpura National Park and the Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, connected by the Pachmarhi Sanctuary. The region's landscape features undulating hills, dense forests, grasslands, streams, and waterfalls, creating a varied terrain that supports rich biodiversity. It is home to numerous flora and fauna species including the Bengal tiger, Indian bison (gaur), leopard, sloth bear, and over 300 bird species, making it an important habitat for wildlife conservation.

Besides its ecological value, the reserve encompasses the hill station of Pachmarhi, famous for its natural caves, waterfalls such as Bee Falls and Duchess Falls, and ancient rock shelters that display prehistoric paintings. Visitors to the reserve can engage in trekking through well-marked trails, wildlife safaris, birdwatching, and enjoying scenic viewpoints.
