About This Landmark

Camping at Mirror Lake Campground

Mirror Lake Campground, situated within Michigan’s stunning Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, offers a serene, rugged escape for nature enthusiasts. This secluded site, surrounded by dense forest and perched near the tranquil Mirror Lake, affords visitors the chance to experience quintessential camping in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Famous for its pristine beauty, the area attracts campers who crave both relaxation and adventure.

Adventure Guide to Camping at Mirror Lake Campground

  • Mirror Lake Campsites: The campground features 18 semi-primitive sites, each equipped with a fire pit and picnic table. Most sites are situated close to the water, offering picturesque lake views and soothing sounds of wildlife. This makes it an ideal spot for those who enjoy quiet mornings with a view or fishing directly from the shore. While the facilities are basic—pit toilets and no running water—they enhance the wilderness experience.

  • Hiking Trails Access: Mirror Lake Campground serves as a gateway to some of the park's most scenic hiking trails. The popular Escarpment Trail is nearby, offering breathtaking overlooks of the Lake of the Clouds and Porcupine Mountains. The Lake Superior Trail can also be accessed from the campground, making it a great choice for avid hikers.

  • Fishing and Canoeing: Mirror Lake’s calm waters make it an excellent spot for fishing and canoeing. Anglers frequently catch brook trout here, while canoeing enthusiasts enjoy gliding through the still waters, surrounded by dense trees. Canoes and small boats can be hand-carried to the lake, as there’s no boat launch.

Local Insights

Mirror Lake was named for the way it reflects the surrounding forest, which is particularly stunning during Michigan's autumn foliage season. Camping here provides direct immersion into an ancient wilderness, believed to have been home to Ojibwa communities for centuries.
