Scenic Escape at Umpqua Lighthouse State Park

Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, set near Reedsport on Oregon’s stunning southern coast, offers a peaceful getaway filled with scenic views and diverse outdoor activities. This park is especially notable for its combination of coastal landscape and forested surroundings, giving visitors a refreshing mix of ocean air and old-growth trees. At the heart of the park stands the historic Umpqua River Lighthouse, built in 1857. It remains an active lighthouse, guiding vessels with its distinctive red and white flashing light—a rare feature on the West Coast that makes it a highlight for visitors interested in maritime history.

Visitors are often drawn to Lake Marie, a quiet freshwater lake that provides opportunities for swimming, paddleboarding, and picnicking along its shore. Towering Douglas fir and cedar trees frame the area, creating a serene environment that invites wildlife encounters, from deer quietly grazing to eagles soaring overhead. The lighthouse itself is made even more captivating by its red brick interior, reminiscent of classical East Coast or European design, and offers an excellent vantage point for whale watching during migration seasons.

The park is well equipped for campers and travelers, offering a range of accommodations including tent sites, RV hookups, cabins, and unique yurts positioned beside the lake. Well-maintained hiking trails loop around Lake Marie and through shaded forest, providing easy access to both the lighthouse and coastal viewpoints. The onsite museum presents engaging exhibits on the history of the lighthouse and the region’s maritime connections. Whether searching for active adventure or quiet reflection, visitors consistently find Umpqua Lighthouse State Park a distinctive spot to connect with Oregon’s natural beauty and coastal heritage.
