Waterfall Wonders: Dry Falls in Highlands, NC

Scenic Waterfall Experience at Dry Falls, Highlands, NC

Dry Falls, near the quaint mountain town of Highlands in Western North Carolina, offers visitors a captivating natural wonder unlike most waterfalls in the region. This impressive 75-foot cascade is famous for the rare opportunity to walk safely behind the flowing water curtain, providing a close-up sensory experience of the falls’ cool spray and thunderous sound. Positioned within the Nantahala National Forest, Dry Falls stands out as a must-see feature along the scenic Waterfall Byway, a 98-mile stretch celebrated for its abundant cascades and forested beauty.

The waterfall gently spills over a wide rock ledge, creating a clear pathway behind it where visitors can comfortably pass without getting drenched, hence the name. The surrounding forest is rich with native rhododendrons, mountain laurels, and occasional glimpses of local wildlife, offering a serene backdrop for photographers and nature enthusiasts. The short, well-maintained trail from the parking lot to the falls makes this destination accessible to families and casual hikers alike, though there are some stairs that limit stroller access. A small parking fee helps maintain the site’s facilities and cleanliness.

Historically, this area was regarded as sacred by the Cherokee people, adding a layer of cultural depth to the visit. Many travelers find the falls especially beautiful near sunset when the light softens and crowds thin out. Whether for an easy outdoor outing or a peaceful moment surrounded by nature’s power, Dry Falls remains a memorable landmark in North Carolina’s mountainous landscape.
