Majestic Views at Yellow Mountain Fire Tower

Scenic Hike to Yellow Mountain Fire Tower, Highlands, NC

Yellow Mountain Fire Tower stands high above the rugged terrain near Highlands, North Carolina, offering one of the most dramatic summit views in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This historic fire tower, dating back to the 1930s, was once part of the region’s wildfire detection system and now serves as a remarkable landmark for outdoor lovers. The climb to this vantage point covers a forested trail that winds through mixed hardwoods, creating a serene environment filled with seasonal wildflowers and vibrant autumn foliage.

The trail stretches roughly 12 to 13 miles round-trip, making for a challenging day hike with steady inclines that reward travelers with sweeping vistas of distant peaks and valleys. Despite the often dense tree cover on the hike, the final ascent unveils wide panoramic views from the fire tower itself. Visitors frequently note the solitude of the trail, as it sees fewer crowds than more popular nearby hikes, offering a peaceful connection with nature.

The tower’s metal structure endures years of wind and weather, reinforced by cables visible at its top. This weathered look adds to its historic character. Hikers appreciate that the summit provides a rare spot for camping and shelter, though the area’s changing weather means preparation is key.
