Waterfall Wonder: Folsom Falls, New Mexico

Folsom Falls: Natural Wonder in Northeastern New Mexico

Folsom Falls is a captivating natural landmark located near the quiet village of Folsom, in northeastern New Mexico. This waterfall gently tumbles over ancient volcanic rocks into a clear, tranquil pool, making it a remarkable sight within a landscape shaped by volcanic activity. The falls are surrounded by rugged terrain, with scenic mesas and diverse vegetation including native grasses, shrubs, and trees that thrive in this semi-arid region. This combination of geological and natural features offers visitors an authentic glimpse of New Mexico’s varied environments.

What sets Folsom Falls apart is both its natural beauty and the deep history embedded in the area. Near the falls, archaeologists discovered evidence of one of North America’s earliest human cultures—known as the Folsom Man—highlighting the long-standing significance of this region. The falls themselves provide a peaceful retreat with the soothing sound of cascading water contrasting the dry landscape, offering a rare aquatic oasis in this part of the state.

Though once accessible to the public, the falls currently stand on private land, requiring permission for access. Earlier visitors have fond memories of the falls as a fishing spot and picnic area, though increased visitation and litter have led to its closure. Still, Folsom Falls remains a special natural feature worth recognizing for its volcanic rock formations and its connection to early human history, making it distinctive among New Mexico’s outdoor sites.
