Dusk settles over the Karori valley and the city lights of Wellington soften as you step from the Visitor Centre into the cool hush of Zealandia. Guided by torchlight, the path threads between ancient rimu and kahikatea, and the forest seems to inhale—leaves click, an upturned beech rustles, and distant calls puncture the dark. On a clear night the guide pauses; the high, drawn-out whistle of a morepork (ruru) or the unexpected shuffling of a little spotted kiwi can make the valley feel older than the city beyond.
