A cold wind off the Tatra lifts as the minivan slides out of Kraków and into a landscape that tightens into ridges and villages. Snow clings to spruce boughs and smoke rises from tile-roof cottages; by the time you reach Witów Ski the world has narrowed to white runs flanked by dark forest and a line of skiers ready to carve their way downhill.
