By midmorning the funicular to Gubałówka hums upward; at the top the High Tatras loom like a slow-moving force, snow clinging to the highest ridges well into May. Streets below—Krupówki’s brisk pedestrian spine—offer a counterpoint of wooden shops, smoked-cheese stalls, and the steady clack of alpine boots.
