York’s core developed from a Roman fortress to the Viking Jorvik trading center and later a prosperous medieval wool and ecclesiastical city; many buildings still display layers of those eras.
Historic York relies on visitor stewardship to protect fragile streets and interiors; stick to public paths, avoid climbing on ruins, and minimize litter to reduce wear on heritage fabric.
