You meet at Ximending before the bus eases onto Taiwan’s northeastern ribbon of coastline. At Yehliu Geopark the wind and sea have been given license: mushroom-shaped hoodoos and the famous Queen’s Head stand on a wave-cut platform, pitted sandstone and shale shaped by salt, wind and time. The air tastes faintly of brine and diesel as you move from exposed promontory to sheltered alleys.
