The Port of Melbourne grew into the Southern Hemisphere’s largest 19th-century port; the Yarra and its docks drove Melbourne’s timber, wool and grain trade and shaped the city’s industrial geography.
The Yarra faces urban pressures—tour operators and authorities encourage staying on designated walkways and minimizing noise and litter to protect river habitats.
