Before sunrise the jeep slips away from Bentota’s palm-shadowed coast and the road loosens into dry scrub; the engine hums and the horizon lightens into a thin band of gold. By mid-morning the landscape has changed — salt flats, tidal lagoons and scattered thorn forest opening into sun-baked grass where splotches of shade could hide a leopard.
