Morning light skims the tiled roofs as a private van eases out of Hangzhou toward Wuzhen’s canals. Walkers and shopkeepers are already at work; the town’s stone bridges punctuate slow-moving water and small wooden boats bob beneath archways. The pace of the day is deliberate: wandering lanes in the morning, lunch in a local restaurant, then a tranquil boat ride across West Lake in the afternoon.
