A fine, cold light slides across the pines as you step from Likani gorge onto a crisp ribbon of snow. Snow crunches beneath snowshoes and the air smells of resin and mineral springs; the Borjomi valley opens and the track begins to climb. By dusk the group reaches Chitakhevi shelter, where a small wooden hut and a stoked fire feel deliberately simple and honest.
