A flat, pale light sits over the sea as you push off from a rickety jetty outside Vaxholm. The archipelago opens in low, rounded islands—rocky shores dusted with lichen, the occasional red cottage clinging to the water—and your paddle clicks a steady rhythm into the hush. Cold air bites at exposed skin until the drysuit seals warmth around your core; steam lingers from thermos coffee, and the only sound is paddle on water and the distant call of a sea bird.

Tours are generally for ages 16+; private family-friendly options may be available on request for younger children.
Vaxholm has long been a defensive choke point for Stockholm—Vaxholm Fortress was established in the 1500s and marks the archipelago’s maritime history.
The archipelago is managed with conservation in mind—stay on designated launch points, pack out all waste, and avoid disturbing haul-out sites for seals.
