Cold air bites briefly as you push off from a narrow quay in Brosundet and the city’s Art Nouveau facades slide past — white, ochre and green against a pewter sky. The Gulf Stream keeps the channels open; the sea here refuses to freeze and the water is often startlingly clear in winter, revealing starfish clinging to rock and small fish weaving between pilings.

Yes — the guides use stable tandem kayaks and provide instruction; paddling is on sheltered coastal channels with gentle currents.
Drysuits, spray skirts and active paddling keep most people comfortable; bring insulating layers for before and after the paddle.
Approximately 4 hours total including guided paddling around Brosundet, time on the water to observe marine life, and a visit to the Svai floating sauna.
Not recommended for pregnant travelers, those with serious heart problems or spinal injuries due to equipment and motion of paddling.
Ålesund was rebuilt in distinctive Art Nouveau style after the great 1904 fire, giving the harborfront its characteristic architectural character.
The clear winter waters are sensitive habitats—avoid touching marine life, pack out all waste and follow guide instructions to minimize disturbance.
