A cold wind threads through the pines as you step from the parked minivan onto the crushed-snow trail of Ala Archa. The gorge opens like a page: grey granite walls, a river that dares you to follow its course, and a line of firs dusted in new snow. Your guide clips on poles and points the route — today’s aim is Ak Sai waterfall (about 4 km one-way) or the shorter Broken Heart viewpoint (2 km).
