Spending a day touring the vineyards, meeting the region’s wine personalities, and tasting amazing wines is the best way to travel. Our tours usually include opportunities to meet the winemakers themselves, and we like to show a mix of the traditional, the experimental, and the modern to give you a complete picture of the state of the region’s wine. In some regions we can arrange a home-cooked lunch at a winery, elsewhere lunch is at a carefully-selected local restaurant where you can sample the regional food. Either way, many of our guests count their meals eaten on our tours among the highlights of their trip. The day will include time for a bit of sightseeing, as well as a vineyard walk to see firsthand where and how the grapes are grown. The final tasting of the day will be accompanied by a selection of cold local products such as artisanal cheese or cured meats. After all, tasting the local foods is essential to the experience of tasting the wine at its source! The great thing about Hungary’s compact size is that every part of the country can be visited on a day trip, and so can the regions in Slovakia and Austria. By the end of the tour, you should feel like a specialist in the region you have visited. And you will have gained a wine experience to remember.
Weather can change quickly near Lake Balaton and Somló hills; layers keep you comfortable during outdoor vineyard walks.
Drink water throughout the day, especially before wine tastings, to keep your palate fresh and avoid overindulgence.
Vineyard terrain can be uneven and steep; sturdy shoes will help you navigate basalt slopes safely.
Tours fill up quickly due to limited group size and winemaker availability, so book your spot early to secure the experience.
Somló’s vineyards date back centuries, with volcanic soils formed from ancient eruptions deeply influencing wine character and local folklore.
Many winemakers focus on sustainable viticulture methods, preserving soil health and natural biodiversity while minimizing chemical use.
Supportive shoes are necessary for uneven ground on volcanic slopes and vineyard paths.
Spring showers are common; a waterproof layer keeps you dry without overheating.
