Dusty tracks unspool ahead of the open 4x4 as dawn burns off the lowland mist. You push past a shuttered line of thorn scrub into Wilpattu’s interior, where sand-rimmed villus glitter like small lakes and the dry-zone forest tightens its grip. Early light reveals sambar deer stepping out to drink; a koel calls from fever-tree branches; a guide points and the world narrows to a strip of gold where a leopard may slip away.
