Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, located within the San Diego Zoo, offers a unique outdoor adventure experience focused on discovery, education, and hands-on fun for families, especially those with young children. Opened in March 2022, this innovative section of the zoo stands apart as a dynamic environment that combines interactive exhibits with outdoor play zones designed to engage kids' curiosity about wildlife and ecosystems. Spanning three distinct areas, the basecamp integrates climbing obstacles, water features, and multiple indoor exhibits offering close-up views of fascinating animals like insects and small critters native to various habitats.
Visitors enter through inviting outdoor zones with climbing hills and playground-style structures that encourage physical activity amid natural landscaping. The water play area is a popular highlight—fountains and geysers offer a refreshing break on warm San Diego days, making swimsuits and towels an essential pack list item. Inside, the two buildings are split into upper and lower levels featuring immersive displays such as the Spineless Marvels building filled with interactive arthropods and a butterfly biosphere that captivates nature lovers of all ages.
One standout feature of Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is the scheduled outdoor presentations, such as the engaging sloth demonstration, which provide educational opportunities to see animals up close while learning about their behavior and conservation.
